One-and-done Duke star Luol Deng will be able to represent Great Britain in international play after approval of his passport by the UK Home Office.

The English head coach is a little excited.

He plays in the NBA, so he’s probably used to pressure. But I don’t think of him as a saviour–I don’t think we need saving–but he’s a heck of a piece of a puzzle to have.

Does the future look brighter with Luol Deng on board? Of course it does.

Deng is a unique athlete and a unique individual. Had he remained in Durham, his jersey would have ended up in the rafters. Rarely do freshman come into programs like Duke and be identified–by the seniors, no less–as “the best offensive player on the team.” But that is precisely what happened with Deng.

Here’s hoping he has a long future ahead of him, for both the Bulls and the British.
